The Best Part of Waking Up

I’ve had this little scene in my head since I sawn (edit: sawn? wtf) @ghostoffuturespast posted this delicious River pic and I needed to share 💜

As usual, the aroma of coffee tickles her senses and nudges her to wakefulness whenever he sleeps over. She’s not an early riser and never has been. Nonetheless, it’s difficult to ignore the delicious scent in her little studio apartment, and while her slumbering night owl side grumbles at the interruption, her mouth waters. 

Lifting the edge of her sleep mask, she peers out through bleary into the abnormally sunny apartment. The blinds are raised, and the sun’s rays warmly fill the small space. River sits in the window seat, relaxed with one knee propped up under an honest-to-god physical book and a hand on his blissfully smelling coffee. From her cocoon of blankets, she admires his side profile, his features strong and confident, while his body language promises softness and comfort. He exudes a warmth that has nothing to do with the heat of the sun or his over-amped body temperature. 

For someone who’s always found herself in the cold, Darisha can’t help but gravitate towards it. She allows its tendrils to wrap themselves around her and pull her out of bed, tossing off her mask as she does. Wordlessly, on silent feet, she drifts over to the window and curls up in the space he’s left between himself and the window, resting her head against his shoulder and accepting the offered cup of coffee he’s already prepared for her.
